Anti-Bullying Campaign

In September, the suicide of Jamey Rodemeyer brought the serious issue of school bullying to the national spotlight. Not only did his name and story become associated with the popular NoH8 movement, but it even inspired Lady Gaga to dedicate a song to Jamey, who was a self-proclaimed "Gaga Monster." These events hit my school especially hard since we are located only a few miles from Jamey's hometown.

To help combat bullying, yesterday was proclaimed Anti-Bullying Day in our school. Students wore blue clothing to support the victims of bullying, and hundreds of kids signed an anti-bullying pledge inspired by Dr. Phil. To help spread our passionate message against bullying, some of my students worked together to create anti-bullying public service announcements. In the first 24 hours, they have received hundreds of hits on Youtube, and were even featured on the local evening news.

Please take a moment to view the results of their hard work, and if bullying is something your school finds to be an important issue, feel free to share the links. Our goal is to promote the message that bullying cannot be tolerated. If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Hello Mr. Mikulsi,

My name is Ashley Modozie, and I am a double major in English and Secondary Education at the University of South Alabama. I am currently enrolled in EDM 310.

I think it is awesome that your class got involved with this campaign.Bullying is increasing everyday and needs to be eliminated. The school is a place where children should be focused on schoolwork; however, they are distracted by the negativity of their peers. As a victim of bullying, I commend you for taking an active role in making a change! I thank you and your students for taking positive steps toward the future.

Also,I will be summarizing my visit to this blog with a post on my blog by February 12,2012.

Thank you!

Mr. Mikulsi,
I have already commented on one of your other posts, but I am a student at The University of South Alabama. I must say out of all of the Teachers blogs that I have posted on this semester, this one is the best one I have read so far. The video with the blue tape covering the students mouth was so moving. I am extremely proud of these students. They may never know how many lives they are saving by taking this pledge and signing this petition, but I know that they are making an impact. Bullying is a problem and I am so glad that they removed themselves from the problem and became part of the solution!
